ABOUT
This photography workshop will take place on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and in Northern Iceland. We have chosen to limit ourselves to the western and northern part of the country as it offers plenty of coastal scenery and ice formations, which are some of the most dynamic and ever changing subject matters to be encountered in the landscape. We will be in the presence of iconic vistas, which present us with the challenge to see and interpret those well known landscapes in potentially new ways.
In the middle of February one can feel that the days are starting to get longer. Sunrise is at around 9:30 AM and sunset around 6 PM. The evenings will be dedicated to image reviews and lectures. As this workshop is set up to be a landscape photography learning experience we will be limiting our evening excursions to chase Northern lights.
We will be staying for 3 nights at Budir in Snæfellsnes and another 3 nights at Lake Myvatn in the north. Travel in between those two of our main bases will be broken up by overnighting at different locations at the north coast.
My co-instructor, David Ward, is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential landscape photographers working on our planet today. Not only is he a master of the craft but also has unique artistic vision. I am a local Icelandic photographer and have been guiding photographers in Iceland for two decades. David and I have worked together on manyprevious Iceland workshops, the first one in 2012.
We'll be working together in the field making images, review the day’s work in the evenings, listen to inspiring talks and have fun doing what brings us all together – our passion for landscape photography.
ACCOMMODATION
Our hotels are of very good standard – modern and comfortable – and the workshop price is based on accommodation in a single room (double occupancy at a lower rate).
Wi-fi is available everywhere.
We will mostly be dining at the hotels but we might take food with us into the field a few times, to be able to make the most of the available daylight.
GETTING AROUND
We'll be using a couple of 4wd vehicles to get around. Some of our desired locations will require walking over uneven ground to get there. Depending on the conditions the terrain may also be icy. Micro spikes to slip over boots are therefore necessary.
CONDITIONS
Hopefully we’ll have snow and ice although that is not guaranteed. The weather in Iceland is quite variable, even in winter, when there can be spells of warmer weather with the possibility of rain.
