Birds in Iceland:
A Visual Journey
For more than twenty-five years, I’ve spent much of my life outdoors with a camera, following the seasons and the birds that define them. Birds in Iceland: A Visual Journey brings together some of my favourite photographs and reflections from those years — a portrait of Iceland’s birdlife and the landscapes that sustain it.
From windswept cliffs and quiet lakes to heaths and lava fields, the book explores how birds inhabit every corner of this island. Iceland is one of the great bird landscapes of the North Atlantic, home to vast colonies of seabirds, thriving populations of waders and waterfowl, and some of the most spectacular migrations on Earth. The rhythms of these birds are the rhythms of the land itself — shaped by light, weather, and the endless cycle of the seasons.
Each section combines photography with text that draws on both natural history and personal experience. My aim has been to show not only what the birds look like, but how they live — how a Puffin or Gyrfalcon fits within the wider story of Iceland’s nature. Some texts describe species for which Iceland holds special responsibility, while others reflect moments of stillness or surprise in the field. Together, they form a picture of a country where life persists at the edge of the Arctic, fragile yet resilient.
Birds in Iceland: A Visual Journey is not just a collection of images, but an invitation to see through the eyes of those who share this landscape with us. It’s for anyone drawn to wild places — for birdwatchers, photographers, and travelers who sense that the beauty of a place lies as much in its living presence as in its scenery.
