Iceland Landscape Photography Workshop, September 14-23, 2012

A landscape photography workshop focusing on the autumn landscape and Northern lights

Jointly led by Daniel Bergmann and Jeff Davis

Iceland is one of the most exciting photography locations in the world. Probably nowhere else is there such a diversity of subject matter in a relatively small area. Glaciers and geothermal areas, waterfalls and lush green valleys, majestic mountains and black volcanic beaches. Along with ever changing weather and spectacular light conditions. It’s a photographer’s dream come true.

Autumn in Iceland is a time of spectacular contrasts. The day is getting shorter than in summer but it’s still 12 hours of daylight, with sunrise at around 7:30 and sunset at 19:30. This means that it’s dark enough to see the Northern lights (Aurora borealis) in the evening and there’s plenty of golden light during the daytime. The low growing sub-Arctic vegetation is starting to display autumn colors and dramatic weather can create the conditions for unique photography.

The exact itinerary of the workshop will be kept flexible to ensure that we get the best conditions in any location. We’ll use four hotel bases and stay 2–3 nights in each place. The highlights will include the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where ice calfs into a large lagoon and floats around before being carried out to sea, where the surf washes it up on a black beach. Other features of the Vatnajokull national park include numerous glaciers, jagged mountain peaks and the Svartifoss waterfall in Skaftafell. We’ll also photograph the waterfalls and coastal features of the southern coast and travel into the colorful highland area known as Landmannalaugar. At least two days will also be devoted to the Snaefellsnes peninsula on the western part of the island.

During the evenings we’ll be out hunting for the Northern lights if the sky is clear. If not then we’ll work on images and discuss photography, both its technical and philosophical side. Daniel and Jeff will be available at all times to assist and offer advice during shooting and a small group of maximum ten participants offers a personal and enjoyable experience.

We’ll stay in regular hotels (single rooms) and dinners will be taken in the hotels while lunches will be packed and taken in the field or we’ll eat at restaurants (or service stations) along the way if traveling.

This photography tour will last for 10 days (9 nights). We will be staying in good hotels (en suite). There will be some moderate hiking on uneven ground.

The cost for the tour is $5500 US. This is an all-inclusive price, but excluding your airfare to Keflavik, Iceland. From the moment the workshop begins until its end, 10 days later, all costs are included — transportation, food, drinks (excluding alcoholic beverages), and accommodation in a single room.

Jeff Davis is a skilled photographer, workshop instructor and filmmaker from California. He spent three weeks photographing the landscape in Iceland with Daniel Bergmann in the summer of 2010. Please see his work at the Lumen website
