Nature Photography Workshop in Iceland
with Daniel Bergmann

July 20 to 29, 2010 – 2 places available

Send me an email if you want to be notified of openings or when the 2011 workshop is announced

Iceland is without doubt one of the most exciting locations in the world for nature photography. Nowhere else can there be found such a diversity of natural wonders in such a small area. The landscape is dominated by wide open vistas, mountains, glaciers, black volcanic beaches, geothermal activity and waterfalls. It is also a place where millions of birds come to breed every summer and is home to some of the largest bird colonies in Europe, including that of Puffins.

This workshop is about photography and lots of it. There will be no formal classroom sessions, no lectures and no slide shows. Participants and the group leader will work side by side, sharing their knowledge, vision, philosophy and experience. A small group of participants (max. 7) guarantees a more personal and intimate experience than bigger tours can provide. This is a unique opportunity to travel and photograph with an experienced professional who has more than 20 years of photography experience in Iceland and can take you to the best locations that are off the beaten track, and at the right time – when the light is best. Iceland borders the Arctic Circle and receives about 20 hours of daylight at this time of the year. Photography in Iceland during the summer can be hard work and challenging, but great fun and very rewarding. It is an adventure unlike any other!

We will be traveling in the South, Southeast and interior parts of Iceland. Some of the areas are very remote while others are just off the main Highway. During one night we will be staying in mountain cabins in the Kerlingarfjoll region. Apart from that we will be staying in regular hotels with en-suite facilities. During our 9 nights we stay in 6 different places, some are used as base camps for a couple of nights to explore from while others are drop-ins along the way. We will be traveling in a 4x4 vehicle. There will be some hiking over rough and sometimes steep terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this trip.

Location highlights include photographing along the Kjolur highland route, in Kerlingarfjoll mountains, along the South and Southeast coastline, in Skaftafell National Park, at Ingolfshofdi Puffin colony, at the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, the Vatnajokull glacier, in Landmannalaugar plus other places at Fjallabak Nature Reserve and at the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The main focus of this workshop is Iceland's landscape but we'll also be photographing birds and plants. We'll visit at least two Puffin colonies, including Ingolfshofdi in the Southeast.

Nature photographers have a different clock than the regular tourist. We want to be out and shooting when the light is good, which means that we’ll have to adjust our schedule to the light. On some occasions we will therefore be photographing until 23.00 and are back in the field by 3.00. Compromises will have to be made though, because sometimes we’ll also have to be tuned to the normal hotel schedules, in order to get food. In the most remote locations we’ll have picnic lunches in the field, otherwise we’ll dine in restaurants and the hotels. Given the vagaries of the weather in Iceland there will be time to rest and work on images when it rains, and it will most certainly rain.

The cost for the workshop is $5500 US. This is an all-inclusive price, but excluding your airfare to Keflavik, Iceland. From the moment the workshop begins until its end, 10 days later, all costs are included — transportation, food, drinks (excluding alcoholic beverages), and accommodation, which is based on two person to a room (single supplement is available for a $700 additional charge). No tipping is required.

Payments are made in two installments. A deposit of $1,500 must be made within 2 weeks of registration. The balance of $4,000 is due by March 15, 2010. Please note that while spouses are welcome, this really is a trip devoted to photography, and non-photographers are likely not to appreciate the pace and timetable that we'll be keeping. Spouses attending will pay full price regardless of their level of participation.
