Nature Photography Workshop in Iceland
with Daniel Bergmann

July 20 to 29, 2009 - 1 place available

Drop me an email if you want to be notified about future tours.

This workshop is about photographing in the field. There will be no classroom sessions, no lectures and no slide shows. It is not the place for absolute beginners as there will be no basic photographic instruction per-se. Participants and the group leader will work side by side, sharing their knowledge, vision, philosophy and experience. A small group of participants guarantees that the workshop leader is available to work with each one on a personal level at some point of the trip. This is a unique opportunity to travel and shoot with an experienced professional who knows Iceland intimately and can take you to the best photography locations that are off the beaten track, and at the right time – when optimal light shines upon them. Iceland borders the Arctic Circle and receives about 20 hours of daylight at this time of the year. Shooting in Iceland in summer can be hard work and challenging, but great fun and very rewarding. It is an adventure unlike any other!

We will be traveling in the South, Southeast and interior parts of Iceland. Some of the areas are very remote while others are just off the main Highway, which circles the island. During one night we will be staying in mountains huts in the Kerlingarfjoll region. Apart from that we will be staying in regular hotels. During our 9 nights we stay in 5 different places, some are used as base camps to explore from while others are drop-ins along the way. We will be traveling in a 4x4 vehicle. There will be some hiking over rough and sometimes steep terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this trip.

Location highligths include photographing along the Kjolur highland route, in Kerlingarfjoll mountains, along the South and Southeast coastline, in Skaftafell National Park, at Ingolfshofdi Puffin colony, at the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, the Vatnajokull glacier and in Landmannalaugar plus other places at Fjallabak Nature Reserve.

Nature photographers have a different clock than the regular tourist. We want to be out and shooting when the light is good, which means that we’ll have to adjust our schedule to the light. On some occasions we will therefore be photographing until 23.00 and are back in the field by 3.00. Compromises will have to be made though, because sometimes we’ll also have to be tuned to the normal hotel schedules, in order to get food. In the most remote locations we’ll have picnic lunches in the field, otherwise we’ll dine in restaurants and the hotels. Given the vagaries of the weather in Iceland there will be time to rest and work on images when it rains, and it will most certainly rain.

The cost for the workshop is $4900 US. This is an all-inclusive price, but excluding your airfare to Keflavik, Iceland. From the moment the workshop begins until its end, 10 days later, all costs are included — transportation, food, drinks (excluding alcoholic beverages), and accommodation, which is based on two person to a room (single supplement is available for a $500 additional charge). No tipping is required.

Payments are made in two installments. A deposit of $1,500 must be made within 2 weeks of registration. The balance of $3,400 is due by March 15, 2009. Please note that while spouses are welcome, this really is a trip devoted to photography, and non-photographers are likely not to appreciate the pace and timetable that we'll be keeping. Spouses attending will pay full price regardless of their level of participation.
